This paper begins with a comparative overview of the meaning and purpose of citizenship, followed by a presentation of various ways to access and lose citizenship. Cases from specific jurisdictions are then provided (the United States, Germany, France, and South Africa) which aim to show the role of courts in dealing with the many challenges facing citizenship. Finally, the concluding Section puts forward further questions which need to be tackled by jurisdictions and courts.
